Estate sales haven't turned up any great ephemera or photo finds, and the weekly auction has been photo free, but this friday I did find some great enameled tacks! They are in a variety of different shapes and colors. I don't know how I lived without them.

This is possibly my favorite picture in my collection. His pouty face, and the fabric background are so perfect. I found him at the bottom of a box that I purchased at an auction 6 months ago. This Saturday I was at a flea market looking through a small box of photos and found this...It really blew me away that out of the thousands of photos in the world I manage to find two photobooth pictures from the same strip. It was a pleasant surprise. Here are two others I picked up.

Season's Greetings from U.S.S. President Polk

These are two Christmas cards from U.S.S. President Polk (a submarine) to Eileen Pierson in California. Both were sent using V-Mail during World War II . I did a quick search to learn more about V-mail and found that...

V-mail was originally based on the British "Airgraph", and was an unusual and ingenious system for delivering mail from United States troops to home addresses during World War II. V-mail correspondence worked by photographing large amounts of censored mail reduced to thumb-nail size onto reels of microfilm, which weighed much less than the original would have. The film reels were shipped to the US, sent to prescribed destinations for developing at a receiving station near the recipient, and printed out on lightweight photo paper. These facsimiles of these letter-sheets were reproduced about one-quarter the original size and the miniature mail was delivered to the addressee.

Travel Slides

I'd like to start out by revisiting some of my favorite slides from a large group of travel slides I purchased at an auction. The slides came with a bunch of snapshots, two 8mm films, and Pan Am memorabilia. The couple in the photos traveled all over the world, and I guessed that the woman might be a Pan Am Stewardess. Some of the slides were even in a Pan Am envelope. It's also possible that the husband was a pilot. One of the 8mm films had footage from inside the cockpit of a plane. Or maybe they were just rich and liked to fly Pan Am. View more of the slides here.

Dear future readers,
I have just started this blog. It is but a wee little fellow (or lady). In the coming days it will grow to be a respectable sized blog, and some day it may even become an adult. Hopefully I will get to watch this little blog live a long and fulfilling life.
